“Food insecurity, defined as a lack of physical and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet dietary needs and food preferences, is a serious concern in Canadian urban centres.” FAO. Rome Declaration on World Food Security. 1996

The Incredible Edible’s mission is to allow everyone access to good food with dignity and enjoy fresh picked produce for free. Through the support of the Horticultural Society and the community, we have had nine successful seasons. Each year we are able to do a bit more.

So far we have been able to put in a fair number of seeds and seedlings including a large bed of the three sisters: squash (spaghetti), bush beans and corn. Another bed consisted of cucumbers, radishes, and tomatoes while others held zucchini, Swiss chard, and kale with marigold and basil companions. Two planters were filled with herbs; thyme, mint, rosemary, and sage, while runner beans were planted around the tepee-like structure.

There are some exciting plans in the works pending funding, including a new pergola and a memorial garden. An herb garden will be doubled in size as well as the addition of a garden for pollinators. Other additions will include more strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, and asparagus. There will be a general cleanup and rejuvenation of the ‘hill’ area where children may play. Considerable amending of the soil will need to be done as well as new or fixed supporting structures for vines.
